Just because Barack Obama is the president-elect doesn't mean he can't still go to Manny's deli for lunch.

The lunch hot spot south of the Loop came alive with cheers and applause when Obama and his senior advisor Valerie Jarrett entered the legendary deli with a phalanx of Secret Service and dozens of photographers, cameramen and press at 12:30 p.m. Friday.

"Great to see you," Obama, clad in a black wool overcoat, said as he waved to well-wishers. He and Jarrett, in a black trench coat, stood at the counter as seven chefs in white hats stood behind the long cafeteria-style counter awaiting their orders.

Obama, like many other Chicago and national politicians, has stopped to shake hands with the lunch crowd at Manny's during campaigns. He also dines there regularly with his senior advisor David Axelrod and new chief of staff Rahm Emanuel.

"I have to get the corned beef for Rahm," Obama told Jarrett.

Owner Ken Raskin - son of Manny Raskin, who started the deli in 1942 - shook Obama's hand and asked him to sign a photo of Obama and Mayor Daley eating lunch there just after Obama won the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate four years ago.

"I've aged a bit since then," Obama said as he smiled and sign the photo. "Dave Axelrod says hello, Rahm sends his regards. I ordered him his corned beef." Obama posed for photos with Raskin, his son Danny and his wife, Patti.

"Any time you want an order at the White House, I'll deliver it personally," Raskin told him.

Raskin offered Obama a discount but Obama insisted on paying the full price for three corned beef sandwiches, three potato pancakes and two slices of cherry pie to go.

Asked what he ordered, Obama answered, "We got the corned beef."

Asked by Reuters reporter Jeff Mason, "What do you think about the auto industry?" Obama smiled and repeated, "We got the corned beef." Then Obama turned and started circling the cavernous dining room, accepting congratulations from the universally enthusiastic crowd.

Approaching a table of six uniformed recruits from the Police Academy, Obama said, "Good to see you guys. Chicago's finest right there."

New Police Officer Chris Williams told Obama that the president-elect knew Williams' grandfather Chuck Bowen, a former Cook County commissioner and aide to Mayor Daley.

Shaking Williams' hand, Obama said, "Tell him I said hello. I haven't seen him in a long time."

Obama got cheers on the way out and shook hands with a crowd of fans who had assembled outside.

Raskin said he got about 15 minutes' notice the president-elect would be stopping by.

Obama lamented in a recent interview with "60 Minutes" that his new status means he can't just go out for a walk or be as spontaneous as he'd like.

After his 15-minute stop, Obama and Jarrett sped back in the motorcade to his transition office in the Loop to continue assembling his Cabinet.

The New York Times was reporting Friday afternon that Sen. Hillary Clinton would be accepting his offer to be secretary of state, which is reportedly contingent on the vetting of her husband's business interests.

Pagan Lore for Today, November 22

    Saturday, November 22, 2008, 09:37 AM [General]

Today is the Eve of St Clement's day, November 23. Clement is the patron of blacksmiths. On this eve in England the tradesmen gathered and one of the senior apprentices was chosen as ‘Old Clem'. He would be dressed in a greatcoat, his head covered in a wig, and his face masked with a long white beard. Old Clem sat in a large wooden chair, with a crown and anchor made of wood on top, and four transparencies around it representing ‘the blacksmiths' arms’, ‘anchor smiths at work’, ‘Britannia with her anchor’ and ‘Mt Etna’. Clem also had a wooden anvil. The other smiths would bear sledge hammers, battle axes, tomahawks, and so on, and they formed a procession around town.

On this date (approximately), the Sun enters the astrological sign of Sagittarius. Persons born under the sign of the Centaur-Archer are said to be optimistic, enthusiastic, curious, and often outspoken and prone to exaggeration. Sagittarius is a fire sign and is ruled by the planet Jupiter.

    Making a Difference

Saturday, November 22, 2008, 03:31 PM GMT [General]

    Making a Difference

This is a familiar story that I'm sure you've heard before, but it has great meaning.

A mid-westerner was vacationing on the New England coast. One morning, very early, she was walking along the beach -- the sun was still below the horizon, the rain had ended, the sea was calm, and a rainbow bridged the blue Atlantic with the green shoreline.

While enjoying the beauty about her, she glanced down the beach and saw a lone figure of a young man silhouetted against the sea. He skipped and frolicked as if performing a ritual dance to celebrate the dawn.

Fascinated, she moved closer. As she approached, she realized the young man was not dancing -- he was, with graceful and joyous movements, picking up objects and tossing them into the sea. Soon she realized the objects were starfish.

"Why are you throwing starfish into the sea?"

"The tide is going out and if they are still here when the sun rises, they will die." And without breaking his rhythm he continued tossing them out to sea.

"That's ridiculous! There are thousands of miles of beach and millions of starfish. You can't really believe that what you are doing could possibly make a difference!"

He smiled, bent over and picked up another starfish, paused thoughtfully, and remarked as he tossed it into the waves... "It makes a difference to this one."

Who is it that has made the greatest impact on your life? I suspect it was someone who isn't famous worldwide, maybe even someone who is not known much outside of the county in which he or she lives. But you are well aware of how much that person has made a difference in your life.

We all know many people like this -- "ordinary" people who touch the lives of others around them, making a tremendous difference through their love for God and their service to others.

What difference does your small deed of kindness make? Jesus said,

"Inasmuch as you did it to the least of these my brethren, you did it to me." (Matthew 25:40)

You can't change the world! Or can you? Perhaps not all at once. But you can change it one piece at a time by making a difference in somebody's life.

FLORIDA COURT SETS ATHEIST HOLY DAY

Saturday, November 22, 2008, 10:28 AM EST [General]

In Florida , an atheist created a case against the upcoming Easter & Passover holy days.  He hired an attorney to bring a discrimination case against Christians, Jews & observances of their holy days.  The argument was it was unfair that atheists had no such recognized day.

The case was brought before a judge.  After listening to the passionate presentation by the lawyer, the judge banged his gavel declaring,  "Case dismissed."

The lawyer immediately stood objecting to the ruling saying,  "Your honor, how can you possibly dismiss this case?  The Christians have Christmas, Easter & others.  The Jews have Passover, Yom Kippur & Hanukkah.  Yet my client & all other atheists have no such holidays."

The judge leaned forward in his chair saying, "But you do, counsel, your client is woefully ignorant."  The lawyer said, "Your Honor, we are unaware of any special observance or holiday for atheists."

The judge said, "The calendar says April 1st is 'April Fools Day.'  Psalm 14:1 states 'The fool says in his heart, there is no God.'  Thus, it is the opinion of this court, that if your client says there is no God, then he is a fool.  Therefore, April 1st is his day.  Court is adjourned."

Auxilio... Dios se olvidó de mi

Saturday, November 22, 2008, 10:24 AM EST [General]

Auxilio...

He puesto toda mi confianza en El y todavía no tengo respuesta. Me siento abandonado, solo y triste.

    - ¿Entablar relaciones profundas y satisfactorias?

Survivor Series 2008

Saturday, November 22, 2008, 09:18 AM CST [General]

Greetings again from my neck of the woods. As all of you out there may know this Sunday is the 22nd edition of the Survivor Series. This event is shaping up to be great with 3 traditional Survivor Series elimination matches, 2 World Title matches, and a casket match of epic proportions. I'm not great at making predictions, so I'm going to try and do my best. The elimination matches are going to be more difficult because they can go so many ways. Those matches I'll only guess which team will win, and not who will be the survivors of the match. All the other matches I can just take a pick and provide some key points.

    Team Batista Vs Team Orton

    Traditional Survivor Series Match

    My Pick:  Team Batista

Although on paper, it looks like Team Orton would win this go around, especially with the World's Strongest Man on board, but even the biggest of men have an Achilles heel. Look for this one to drag out a good 30 minutes.

    Team HBK Vs Team JBL

    My Pick: Team HBK

This one is a little bit different, seeing as both teams have a giant in their corner. The Showstopper has the Great Khali in his corner while the Big Red Machine is in JBL's fold, but even Kane has stated that if Layfield makes one wrong move, he might have a mutiny on his hands. My concern over their team unity drove me to pick Michaels' team over Team JBL.

    Team Raw Vs Team SmackDown

    My Pick: Team Raw

This one also has it's cohesiveness issues, but on both sides. I do see that it would be more beneficial to Raw because the Divas DO have issues especially revolving around each brand's respective championships. Because of this, it is really difficult to decide clearly for one team. Expect the unexpected from the Divas in this one.

    Casket Match

    Undertaker Vs. Big Show

    My Pick: The Undertaker

I've enjoyed watching these two go at it and even team up with each other for years now, and there has been bad blood between these two for a while now over the whole Vickie and Edge screwed me out of the title story. Show may be doing a noble thing here by protecting the G.M., but in life altogether, you reap what you sow. The Dead Man from Death Valley will have his revenge on the Big Show and eventually Guerrero too.

    WWE Championship Triple Threat Match

HHH (c) Vs Jeff Hardy Vs Vladimir Koslov

    My Pick: Jeff Hardy

This match had its difficulties as well, especially due to the fact that Koslov is undefeated (like Goldberg, without the fan support), and Hardy has a win going into this match over the champion in a non-title match thanks to a distraction by the Moscow Mauler. It's not that I don't expect HHH to bring his A-game, he always does. It's the fact that there is a 33.3% chance of him retaining against someone who is undefeated and someone who is constantly nipping at his heels to win the title. Although Hardy also looks like a long shot as well, he doesn't have to pin Koslov to win HHH's title.

    World Heavyweight Championship

Chris Jericho (c) Vs John Cena

    My Pick: John Cena

Since Jericho has re-emerged in the WWE, he went from being a obvious fan favorite to a self-centered egotistical mad man who has had success at the downfall of others. Sunday, he faces the man who cost him his job a few years back. Although the tables have switched being that Cena IS NOT the champion going into this match, don't count him out. Being away from the ring should not affect Cena in this match, but Jericho will find unorthodox ways to win, i.e. the Cage match Vs Batista for the World Title two weeks ago on Raw. Love him or hate him, Cena is my pick to 'save us' from Y2J

That just about wraps this one up for me. I'll be watching, will you?

Saturday, November 22, 2008, 10:17 AM EST [General]

Less than one hour hence, my friend shall arrive with a carriage and 'twill be time for me to get in the carriage and begin the venture to the land of my sister's abode. Nothing in the world I find greater pleasure in than time with my family scattered as they are throughout the land.

I shall miss you in my absence, so I must do a bit of "business" now... first, to all who travel for this time of giving thanks to be with friends and family. I pray that the God of heaven and earth bless us with safe journeys.   Next, to our military personnel where ever you might be, I pray that your efforts are met  with success, and that in safety you return to your loved ones as quickly as possible.

Finally, I pray for us all to realize the ways in which our lives are blessed AND to everyone who stumbles 'pon this writing that you may know of the writer's sincere and humble wish for a Blessed & Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
